Today, the EU adds the Iranian airlines Iran Air, Mahan Airlines and Saha Airlines on the EU sanction list, together with 19 Iranian individuals. This measure is justified by the accusation that the airlines transported drones to Russia that were used in the war against Ukraine. Iran denies this. There is currently no information from the EU, the German Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs or the Federal Aviation Office what this measure means in practice. There are numerous Iranian travelers currently in the EU who, for example, have a return ticket to Iran. Various shipping companies have cargo destined for Iran lying in airports that are to be transported with Iran Air. The EU has apparently once again imposed sanctions without considering the practical consequences. We'll keep you updated.
Update 1
According to information from Iran Air, next Thursday, October 17th. the Hamburg - Tehran flight operates regularly. Iran Air assumes a transition period of 1 year. However, this statement has not yet been confirmed by the EU, the Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs or the Federal Aviation Office. The impression grew that “lonely decisions” were once again being made in Brussels without considering the practical consequences.
There remains considerable uncertainty for thousands of Iranian travelers who are currently in Europe how they will get back home. So much for the topic of “smart sanctions” and other Sunday speeches from politicians in which they emphasized that the sanctions should not hit the Iranian population, but rather decision-makers in Iran.
